CAUGHT IN THE SPOTLIGHT, the latest Harlequin Desire release from author Jules Bennett, is a beautifully written book. I admit that the Desire and Presents lines from Harlequin are a guilty pleasure of mine. What about you? Do you enjoy them? I don’t buy every single one, but tend to read them in clusters. I’ll read several in a row, then turn back to the darker, edgier romantic suspense that I love so much before coming back for more!

Jules was kind enough to give me an early copy of CAUGHT IN THE SPOTLIGHT and once I started reading, I devoured it. I have a feeling that you will do the same thing!

My review:
Mia Spinelli loves her new position as PA to the famously well-known and much-loved actress Olivia Dane. Olivia is the sweetheart of Hollywood and Mia finds her a true pleasure to work for. Putting her former employer and the rumors that she was the lover behind his troubled marriage behind her, Mia is especially thankful for the opportunity to work for Olivia. Now Olivia’s son, Bronson, is another story. His obvious distrust because of her former employer, whom Bronson despises, is more than a little troublesome to Mia. There’s no denying the sparks between them though, and when Mia turns up pregnant, those sparks and every other emotion burn even hotter. And if things aren't complicated enough, Mia knows a secret about the Dane family that, if found out, would set all of Hollywood back on its heels.

Bronson doesn't trust Mia one iota, but can’t deny that she’s got him twisted into knots. His mother’s fondness of Mia doesn’t make things any easier. He doesn’t want to believe that the baby she’s carrying is his, but there is an air of caring and vulnerability about her that makes him question whether she would lie about something so serious.

Jules Bennett has a real flair for writing characters with style and class. Mia is adorable and watching the seemingly cold-hearted Bronson take a fall for her is a real treat. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood is a fabulous backdrop for this story. I strongly recommend CAUGHT IN THE SPOTLIGHT to all romance readers.

"Weigh in" on Paula Deen's Type 2 Diabetes announcement

A blog post appearing on Twitter this afternoon has prompted me to post on this topic as well. I loved Paula Deen to bits when she first came on the "cooking" scene. We've even been to her restaurant a couple of times and I wanted so badly to someday get to go to her live audience show. She began to lose appeal once she attained fame and fortune and became shrouded in a falseness that I did/do not enjoy. Her belly laughs became cackles and calling her guests, including her sons by their names or son every single time she speaks to them was also grating.
Now I have another, more serious, reason to dislike her. She was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes three years ago. Three years. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike her for this - I too have Type 2 Diabetes, diagnosed about 7 or 8 years ago. What I absolutely hate is that she waits this long to make the announcement while she gets her ducks in a row (she phrased it another way, I can't recall exactly, same diff), in other words, while she's making book deals, new television show/tour deals, and pharmaceutical company representation deals, all the while continuing to (mostly) push unhealthy cooking (there have been occasional healthy changes made to some of her recipes). I realize that most people watching realize that you have to eat that way in moderation and that common sense tells you that you cannot eat like that day in and day out. But there are some people out there NOT intelligent or informed enough to not assume that because this is what Paula does, they'll do it to - at the risk of their health. Was this delay fair to them? No, it wasn't.
While I'm all about celebrities and television personalities having their privacy, she has made multi-millions of dollars off her fans and I personally feel that she owed it to them to be upfront a little earlier on.
What do you think? Am I being bitchy and small?

Andrea proves to be strongly determined to get what she wants. It isn't long before what Troy and Andrea want goes beyond the game of basketball and the truth behind issues plaguing the team may prove too much for the relationship they both long for.

Regina Hart, aka Patricia Sargeant, obviously pours her heart and soul into each and every book she writes. Her characters are incredibly realistic and setting descriptions draw you into every conversation and scene.

New Years Eve, 1951

Those of you on Facebook already saw this pic, but I wanted to share it here too. This has long been one of my favorite photos. These are my parents on December 31, 1951, the night they were engaged. They married on December 27, 1952. My father died at 49 in 1978, cutting short one of the most perfect marriages ever. My mother is almost 82 and still alone after all these years.

I know that there isn't a New Year's Eve that my mother doesn't reminisce about that special day in 1951.

I hope you all have a great celebration of the incoming new year!

This book had me hooked the moment I first read about it - and then after waiting what seemed like forever, it was finally in my hot little hands on my Kindle and I devoured it. Of the authors in this huge anthology, many are long-time favorites of mine and a couple I wasn't as familiar with. Some of the stories are sweet, most are sexy, but none are erotic, if that's your poison. Proceeds from this book benefit Veterans Research Corp - how can anyone resist helping our nation's veterans?
I've noticed that many of you don't seem to care as much for Kindle giveaways, so this time I'm giving away one copy of the print version and one Kindle copy here - if you're only interested in a specific version, you should note that in your comment or I'm going to assume it makes no difference.

Holiday music

How many of you are holiday music listeners? I typically start listening a week or two before Thanksgiving. If I'm home alone, I turn on the Time Warner "Sounds of the Season" channel - if I'm in the car, I've got the music blaring and I'm singing along at the top of my lungs! My family doesn't share my love of Christmas music, so I have to squeeze it in when I can!
My girls often burn CDs for me and I love the assortment of music they put on them - some I'm familiar with and they know I love, but most are surprises that they think I'll enjoy. I have a couple of holiday assortments that Lindsay has made for me that make me smile every time I listen. The assortment includes Elvis, Jose Feliciano, Ray Charles, Bing Crosby and some National Lampoon Christmas Vacation selections.
So what are your listening habits? Do you sing out loud to the songs you've known since childhood? I find myself humming constantly this time of year, regardless of where I am. I have a feeling I'll be one of those little old ladies (like my mom!) who hums her way through life. There are so many things worse, right?

My review:
Kylie Brant’s DEADLY SINS is a rich example of how romantic suspense should be written. Intrigue and suspense surround a sensually passionate romance that deserves to be read by every romantic suspense fan.

FBI agent, Jaid Marlowe, is assigned to investigate the murder of a Supreme Court Justice. When her former lover and former FBI agent, Adam Raiker, is assigned as her partner, the case becomes even more complicated. When suspicions begin to be directed at Adam, Jaid has more to worry about than simply solving the murder. She has to contend with her growing feelings for Adam while they are in a fight for their lives.

Jaid has never been far away in Adam’s mind. Being partnered with her on this case is heaven and hell for him. Adam is mostly successful at keeping his mind on the task at hand, but there are those occasional moments when he thinks he’ll lose his mind without touching, tasting Jaid again. Adam had a troubled past and it’s likely that damage is what has made him the incredibly strong, resilient man he is today.

DEADLY SINS isn’t loaded with sex and I suppose that might be a bit of a disappointment for some readers. Personally, I prefer an intricately thought-out, well-told story rather than having sex scenes thrown in willy nilly just to have them in there. Adam and Jade have a romantic history, so there isn’t chapter after chapter of them getting to know one another. Ms. Brant has given readers a powerful story with DEADLY SINS. The combination of an intensely and carefully layered storyline makes for a satisfying romantic suspense.

An oldie but goodie!

I don't know if any of you enjoy series romance, but I recently read one that is worth talking about. Harlequin Presents has reissued numerous titles from the 90s and I've been making a point to stay away from them, preferring more current, updated reading. There was one title, THE PRICE OF A BRIDE by Michelle Reid that had so many interesting reviews that I couldn't resist.

The characters in this book are incredibly well-written and their story is unique. There was a little more love/hate than I typically have patience for, but overall this is a very good book, with an interesting storyline. The heroine is the character who is tortured, and although I wanted to give the characters a swift kick a couple of times, I stayed up late last night to read and finished it on my lunch break today. I recommend this book for romance lovers.
Are any of you fans of series romance? I enjoy the Presents and Desire lines. They're quick reads and I always find the happily ever after satisfying.

Stephanie Tyler has a new release, NIGHT MOVES, and if you're a fan of romantic suspense done right, you should get your hands on this book, pronto! I was incredibly lucky in getting a copy for Romance Junkies review and to tell the truth, had a hard time writing a review that wasn't 100% gushing! Personally, I think reading the series in order is the best way to enjoy, but each one stands competently on its own.

I’m almost sad to be caught up on this series – although there is some consolation that the next book will likely (please!!) be Reid’s story, guaranteed to be equally good!

Curiosity has gotten the better of me!

Hey ladies,

I have a question for you. So many authors have books that rerelease these days - usually the only thing new is the cover. I get very upset when I buy a book that I've already read, don't you? Most (but not all) authors attempt to make it clear, but I think publishers and booksellers could do a better job of informing readers. Yes, I realize that booksellers are only interested in doing what their name implies, but I still feel ripped off. I don't buy on impulse these days as much as I used to, but still don't like feeling that I need to doublecheck whether a "new" release is really a rerelease. If I buy a book that's a rerelease, that leaves me with fewer dollars to purchase a release that is truly "new."
What do you think? How many times have you bought a book that you already have a copy of? Does it make you angry? I imagine with the popularity of ereaders these days, there are more and more of us purchasing Kindle or Nook versions of books we may have forgotten about on our bookshelves. There are some authors that I'll buy on Kindle because I can then donate print versions of their books to the library and clear out some bookshelf space, but I prefer that decision be mine to make; not because I've forgotten about an earlier version of the book.

Cherry Adair has an exciting new series, Cutter Cay, and I was fortunate enough to get a copy of RIPTIDE (third in the series) for Romance Junkies review. I immediately fell in love the the characters and found it difficult to tear myself away from the book, but then I had the "last page blues." You know the feeling, when you're excited and itchy for the happy ending, but then once you're there, it's just so over. It's almost sad sometimes, no? I gave the book a rating of 5 Blue Ribbons, the highest possible at Romance Junkies.

My review:
Second in the Cutter Cay trilogy, RIPTIDE tells the story of sunken treasure hunter Nick Cutter and the beautiful Princess Gabriella Visconti. Dark dangers lurk above and below the water in yet another heartwarming, pulse-pounding romantic suspense from Cherry Adair.When Princess Gabriella Visconti marches onto Nick Cutter's state of the art salvage ship demanding return of the money her reckless brother, the king, invested in Nick's current dive, she refuses to leave without it. When her helicopter taxi leaves the ship without her, she is at Nick's mercy. Despite being a princess, Bria did not grow up as royalty. Her parents were killed in a takeover when she was very small and she was whisked away to safety by her bodyguard who became a father figure to her. Now the tables have turned, her bodyguard is gone, and when her little kingdom faces immediate financial ruin because of her brother's investment, she takes it upon herself to see their people taken care of. Nick's explanation that the money has been invested in the dive and cannot be refunded until after the dive, at a significant gain, leaves Bria with no alternative but to leave. When she is brutally attacked on his ship on her last night there, he refuses to let her leave without him and personally takes her to her homeland where threats against her only escalate.
Nick Cutter has no place in his life for princesses, real or not. That is, until Gabriella Visconti strutted her gorgeousness onto his ship. She exudes feminine sexuality without effort and try as Nick may, he can't fight an incredibly intense attraction. Bria is strong and self-assured on the outside, but it doesn't take long before Nick realizes a tender vulnerability about her that he is determined to protect. It isn't long before Bria has Nick realizing that she does have a place in his life, and it's deep-down in his heart.
Cherry Adair has long been one of my absolute favorite authors and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this latest release. The things readers want in a romantic suspense are contained within the pages of this book. The unspoken heat and attraction between these two characters is wonderfully written. Sensuality, mystery, searing passion, gentle strength, there's not a thing missing. Nick's attraction to Bria was instantaneous, but his fall for her was slow and steady, a real work of art and fascinating to witness. The suspense is just as intense and will literally put you on the edge of your seat at times. The appearance of a totally unexpected character was a bonus of sorts, and makes me especially anxious for the next book to see what happens to him. I can't give RIPTIDE a strong enough recommendation. Ms. Adair has given readers everything they expect, and deserve, in their romantic suspense!

My review:
The Brooklyn Monarchs are in last place in the NBA. Majority owner Jaclyn Jones isn't completely pleased with the new coach of the Monarchs, DeMarcus Guinn, but is nevertheless counting on him to turn the team around. As if that wasn't enough, her co-owners are as determined to move the team out of Brooklyn as Jaclyn is to keep them there. Add to all of that the losing battle she's having with her attraction to Marc, and Jaclyn is one very frustrated young woman.
The position of head coach is new to Marc and proves to be much more difficult than he could ever have anticipated, but quitting is not an option to the success-driven coach. He is undeniably interested in his new boss and while he knows he should keep things strictly professional, he's at a loss as to just how to ignore his growing attraction.
Regina Hart is the alter ego of successfully talented author, Patricia Sargeant. FAST BREAK is the first book of a new series by Ms. Hart that promises to be enjoyed and appreciated by romance readers. Jaclyn Jones is a strongly independent business woman and while oftentimes women written in this position are disliked because their determination to lead and rule can make them seem bitchy and cold, that isn't the case here. Jacklyn remains likeable throughout. Basketball has been very good to Marc and he's nervously excited at the prospect of coaching, and hopefully turning around, the Monarchs. Ms. Hart knows her basketball and it shows in this book like a finely executed play. I give FAST BREAK a strong recommendation and hope that readers who aren't familiar with Regina Hart will give her work a try.

I recently read THE EDGE OF NIGHT for Romance Junkies review for author Jill Sorenson. I have enjoyed many of Jill's books, with CRASH INTO ME being my absolute favorite. Jill's writing style isn't butterflies and blue skies, it's more like sultry summer winds and hot, baking pavement. Her characters are remarkably realistic and could easily be someone you went to school with, work with, or pass in the grocery store parking lot. Jill Sorenson is an excellent romantic suspense author that all fans of the genre should be familiar with. THE EDGE OF NIGHT isn’t a flowery, sweetly written romance. It’s gritty and hard-hitting, almost coarse at times. April and Noah are very clearly written and the stutters and bumps of their relationship are incredibly realistic. I have yet to be disappointed by a Jill Sorenson book and strongly urge romantic suspense fans to do themselves a favor and snag this book immediately.

An empty nest

For the first time ever, Tim and I will actually have an empty nest after Kelsey goes back to school in a couple of days. Lindsay and her boyfriend moved into a condo a couple of months ago and while they're only 30 minutes or so away, she also started a new job, so we only see her once or twice a week. Between her leaving, Kelsey going back to school, and a long-time co-worker retiring, I'm the only legal assistant in my office now. Fortunately, the attorneys do a lot of their own documents, etc. so it isn't impossible to handle things for all three of them.

I'm working on some reviews and there will be giveaways, so be sure to check back in a few days. I've been on a serious romantic suspense kick lately and it has played serious havoc with my review books - I'm crazy far behind.

Heartache

Once again, we've lost a beloved pet. Our five year old kitty Lottie had some health issues over the past month and seemed to be doing better. Late last week she rapidly started to deteriorate and we took her back to the vet. The vet phoned me early Saturday morning to say that they'd lost her in the night. Lottie was undoubtedly one of the sweetest kitties that God put on this Earth. We still have two cats plus Kelsey's cat that comes home from school with her on breaks, but losing Lottie is still so very painful.
This pic is Lottie with our basset hound Fred, who many of you will remember we lost a little over two years ago. They were good buddies and I like to think that maybe they're together again.

Here's a few pics taken shortly after we first rescued Lottie and her brother. He went to live with Lindsay's best friend and is fat and happy.

Boogie on the Bricks '11, guaranteed fun!

This weekend is the annual Boogie on the Bricks in Athens, home of Ohio University in southeastern Ohio - about two hours away. I have a lot of family in the Athens area and Lindsay graduated from OU so we've spent a significant amount of time there. Athens is a nice little town with about a dozen bars in its downtown and the majority of the streets have remained brick - beautiful to look at, especially given the beautiful surroundings of the OU campus, but a little bumpy when traveling by car. There's an interesting mix of galleries, shops and restaurants in the area too. The main street is closed off for Boogie on the Bricks, a stage is set up at the end of the street and several local bands play all afternoon and into the evening.
There's a group of us "girls" going and we're looking forward to a great time. Those attending? Both of my daughters, my best friend of 34 years, my oldest daughter's best friend since second grade, and my oldest daughter's future stepmother-in-law. We're spending the night and because there will most likely be a little alcohol along with the boogie, we'll be cabbing it to the downtown and back to the hotel.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! I have a birthday this Sunday and have decided to call it "springing forward" rather than "getting older" - it softens the blow just a tad!

Knocking the dust off

I've been very neglectful, haven't I? I knew I was being lazy, but didn't realize just how lazy until a friend contacted another friend, who then contacted other friends, asking if I was ok. I even had an email from a reader friend from here inquiring whether something was wrong. My apologies.
To be honest, I've been a little stressed at work and just lost interest for a while. I was barely skimming emails and hadn't logged onto Twitter for a few weeks. Things are still stressful, but I'm coming to grips with the changes and am trying to charge onward and upward.
For those who were concerned, I thank you for caring. I imagine the damage is done and I've likely lost a quite a few readers, but I'm hopeful that once things pick up they might straggle back and bring their friends!

My review:
Lise Kimball has faced some daunting obstacles, and flat tire be damned, she's through with feeling helpless. Being married to a verbally abusive husband has served to make her stronger and more determined than ever to live life for herself. A chance meeting with the irresistible Donovan True while on her way to New Orleans brings to surface wants and desires that Lise had extinguished long ago. Nevertheless, she's unsure about trusting another man who is unbelievably capable of taking charge.
Donovan True is a successful, confidently strong man and when he meets Lise and discovers he feels more than a simple physical attraction despite having just met her, he's helpless against that instant attraction.
It's no secret that I have adored Alison Kent and her work for many years and I have to admit that I thought this book, given its length, might be a little rushed and perhaps even limited in believability. I was so very wrong with that line of thinking. The story is fast-paced but not to the detriment of character strength and realism. Alison Kent is an artist when it comes to putting words on paper and she never fails to engage her readers. I give AT HIS MERCY my highest recommendation. The book may not take hours to finish, but successfully tells a beautiful love story.

My review:
SHIVER OF FEAR, second in Roxanne St. Claire’s latest “Guardian Angelinos” series, is a prime example of how romantic suspense should be done. Devyn Sterling is a young woman who is determined to find her heritage, while private investigator Marc Rossi is equally resolved to stop her search. Neither expects the other to be so incredibly determined – or so incredibly irresistible.

Devyn Sterling, recently widowed after the death of her cheater of a husband, is determined to find her biological parents and the search has brought her to Northern Ireland. Devyn was adopted as an infant by a couple who are cold hearted and unable to get past the fact that Devyn does not share their blood. It appears that Devyn’s biological parents are a well-known international fugitive and a bioterrorist, leaving her with a sense of worthlessness and self-doubt. Marc Rossi is a bold, self-assured man and Devyn can’t help but feel safe with him. If she were willing to simply turn over all control, she could easily lean on him and finally have someone to share her fears and weaknesses.
Private investigator Marc Rossi has been hired to bring Devyn Sterling home from Ireland. Once they meet and he sees the pain and suffering in her eyes, he decides to stay for a bit longer before intensifying his efforts to take her home. Getting Devyn to leave isn’t as simple as Marc hoped it would be, with new people and new information popping up at every turn, her stubbornness only grows stronger. Mark and Devyn are quickly cautious of each other, with neither apt to trust the other, given the past betrayals they have experienced.
Strong-willed, intelligent characters successfully build the story’s momentum from beginning to end. Devyn’s desperation to find her birth mother is fierce and at times feels almost tangible. The pacing in SHIVER OF FEAR is steady, gathering speed for an explosive, totally unexpected ending. Ms. St.Claire is masterful at descriptions that pull her readers into every scene. Characters never fail to entertain and the romantic flow is smoothly believable and doesn’t at all feel forced or awkward. Secondary characters are skillfully written into the story and are a bonus of sorts. Ms. St. Claire has given romantic suspense readers a true gift with this latest series and I give it my very strongest recommendation.

My review: In FACE OF DANGER, author Roxanne St. Claire pairs a spunky, private investigating heroine who lives on the edge and makes her own rules, with a by-the-book FBI agent. Sparks guaranteed.

Private Investigator Vivi Angelino, along with her brother and cousins, have been working hard the past few months to make a success of their new investigative business, the Guardian Angelinos. FBI agent Colton Lang has been utilizing their services on occasion and there’s no denying that there’s something happening between he and Vivi. Mostly, they’re driving each other crazy, but there’s clearly an unspoken but undeniable attraction. When Vivi proposes that the Angelinos join forces with the Bureau in finding the murderer who has been dubbed the Red Carpet Killer, killing Oscar winning actresses, Colt laughs. He especially finds humor in Vivi’s suggestion that she be used as a body double for the latest award winner, Cara Ferrari. The laugh’s on him when Vivi and the Guardian Angelinos strike a personal arrangement with the stunning Ms. Ferrari. Vivi’s contract to act as Cara’s body double has very specific conditions and failure to abide by those terms holds serious financial repercussion.
Colt is vying for a promotion that would mean relocating from Boston to L.A., a move that he has looked forward to until he is put in charge of the California team assigned to find the Red Carpet Killer. Colt finds himself working hand in hand with Vivi and while he couldn’t be more opposite of Vivi, the death of his fiancée years before left him scarred and determined to ignore any attraction or feelings he may have. When Vivi, as Cara, is repeatedly attacked, it becomes apparent that the attacks aren’t what they seem and a second, even more sinister, plot is unearthed. Colt’s frustration is that he’s been attracted to Vivi all along, but how that she’s under his constant care and protection, he can’t resist her. Vivi has secretly suffered far longer from a past hurt and she fears that giving her heart and being rejected would be crushing; all the more reason to steer clear of an emotional tangle with Special Agent Lang.
I’ve read all three books in this latest series from Roxanne St. Claire and I can honestly say that FACE OF DANGER is my favorite of the three. The banter between Vivi and Colt is sharply clever, but at no point being smart-assed or juvenile. Not to downplay the passions or sexual attraction in FACE OF DANGER because they are there, but the storytelling is the real star of the book. This story is richly layered with details deliberately and masterfully interwoven. Characters aren’t always who they seem and that’s never been more true than in Ms. St. Claire’s FACE OF DANGER. This is a powerful love story, one that undoubtedly will stay with readers long after they finish the book.

Now for the giveaway. I'm offering a Kindle copy of the first book in the Guardian Angelinos series, EDGE OF SIGHT, although I didn't write a review for it. Jordan Rhodes minds her own business, busily running an exclusive, highly successful wine store. Most people don’t realize that Jordan has worked hard to make her wine shop a success without assistance from her billionaire father. She also spends a fair amount of time worrying about her brother, in prison for a seemingly silly social media crime. When FBI agent Nick McCall pays Jordan a visit and makes her an offer too good to turn down, she grabs it. All Jordan has to do is take a handsome new FBI agent as her date to the annual party of wealthy wine collector and suspected money launderer, Xander Eckhart, in order to plant bugs in his office. When the rookie agent ends up sick the day of the party, Jordan’s new date is the ruggedly handsome agent McCall. The FBI’s offer to free her brother early is the only reason she’s agreeing to work with Agent McCall. The attraction they feel comes as a surprise to both of them.
Nick appreciates Jordan’s beauty and sophistication, not to mention her business savvy, but he can’t help but see her as the spoiled princess-like daughter of a billionaire. After spending more and more time with Jordan when it appears she could be in danger, he realizes that his feelings for her have changed drastically and he’ll do anything necessary to keep her safe.
A LOT LIKE LOVE is a highly enjoyable romantic suspense. Ms. James obviously has a vast knowledge of wine and the wine industry, the resulting character conversations are comfortable and easy, making for a smooth, satisfying reading experience. Jordan and Nick have more in common than either would have initially realized. Both are fiercely loyal to family and friends, and their respect for each other’s commitment to their job is commendable. Secondary characters are equally well-written and their placement is the book plays an important role and at no time does their role feel forced or like filler. I give A LOT LIKE LOVE my highest recommendation for all readers who enjoy well-written romantic suspense.

This series is one I’ve recommended countless times when asked for well-written suspense suggestions. Readers should allow themselves ample reading time for this book because they won’t want to put it down.

Ms. Clare pulls readers into each and every scene, richly layering emotions and tension to the very end. Pamela Clare has earned a spot at the top of my favorite author list.

Denyse Bridger is guesting today - here's a bit about her new Ellora's Cave release, HIDE AND SECRET:
The idea for HIDE AND SECRET began as a stray thought, because in an odd way, through the wonderful entertainment of role-playing that has emerged on Facebook, I was inadvertently cast in the role of "other" without realizing it. Friends and acquaintances abound when you're a public person, as authors tend to be in this wonderful cyber world. I've been friended in recent months by a vast array of vampires, demons, lords and werewolves, to name a few. One of them began a flirtation, and me being me, I played along. It ended up being a case of chat and fun via PM, too - and I told him I felt like his other woman... the idea stayed past the laughter, and I wrote a fictional journal entry and called it "The Secret That He Keeps" and posted a piece of it on FB. I thought that would be an end to it, but Quinn and Bella weren't through talking, so I went back and added more to the piece. At that point, I didn't actually even know their names. I showed the piece to a friend, more of less as "mind-candy" and to give her a laugh, but she surprised me, she wanted to read more, and felt it was a very sexy and alluring story.... as I wrote more, I also started to recognize who I was writing about - a friend who plays the role of Qhuinn Longstrong on Facebook.... (He's from J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood books.) So, I channeled my friend Qhuinn and gave the hero his name. A few more beta reads and my partner on this one suggested that it go to Ellora's Cave.... Imagine my surprise when it was contracted? So, who knows? What began as a stray thought has become a five-star rated erotic "Quickie" for one of the most respected publishing houses in the business! Now I've been asked to tell more of Quinn and Bella's story so there will be a sequel and probably a prequel, too!!!

Author friend Jill Shalvis and I had a discussion last week and as a result, I decided to ask here for readers' opinions. It's a subject that romance readers will likely be familiar with but I'm not so certain you would openly discuss it w/fellow readers. It has become commonplace for romance authors to use terminology that used to be seen mostly in more erotic writings - clit, cock, pussy, dick ... You get the picture. (I hope this doesn't knock me into an 18/older blog status! lol)
We're hopeful that you'll share your honest opinions. Are you shocked to see them? More surprised to NOT see them these days? Do you associate these words with particular authors? Jill does not use these particular words and I still find her books very heated and sensual and I think those of you who read her work will agree. Of the other authors you can think of who DO NOT use these words, do you think of them as being old fashioned or not quite keeping with the program? Or, do you think some veteran authors are using them just because everyone else is?
You can be as Chatty, as blunt, or as vague as you wish, but we are very interested in your opinions. Feel free to answer anonymously if you're shy. And please send your friends - the more opinions, the better!

WHAT I DID FOR A DUKE, the latest from Julie Ann Long - I'm giving away a copy!

I ordered WHAT I DID FOR A DUKE by Julie Anne Long after receiving daily excerpts via email from Eye on Romance. (I have found so many fabulous books through them.) I ordered after the second excerpt, it looked that good! I have two reviews that are past due, but after deciding to sneak a quick peek at the first chapter or two, I couldn't put my Kindle down. Yes, those reviews remain unwritten.
WHAT I DID FOR A DUKE is not your typical historical romance. It is frou frou free and lacks elaborate descriptions of gowns and ballrooms, instead focusing closely on the characters and their emotions and motives.
I had a love/hate relationship with a couple of the characters, including the hero, for a good deal of the book. The hero, Alex, is considerably older than the heroine and while today I might find that a tad squicky, considering the times, it's believable. The contrast between them is crucial to the story. The hero at times put me in mind of the television character "House." He's jaded, undeniably tortured, arrogant, and seemingly uncaring of anyone else, almost to the point of cruelty. Undoubtedly one of the most uniquely original heroes I've ever read. The heroine, Genevieve, at first looks to be your typical historical heroine - sweet, young, and innocent, dreaming of a future with the young man she's loved for most of her life. She sees things with far greater depth than most and Ms. Long's descriptions of Genevieve's thoughts and dreams are simply beautiful. It isn't long before the reader realizes that Genevieve isn't exactly what she seems. She's young and innocent, yes, but she's intelligent, courageous and not the least bit intimidated by the brash, worldly Alex. And while Alex seems somewhat cold hearted and unfeeling almost to the end of the book, one unexpected and hugely unselfish act on his part was all it took to toss me head over heels in love with him.
Ms. Long's talent as a historical romance author is a true gift. WHAT I DID FOR A DUKE is an absolutely beautiful story and I give it my highest recommendation.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Wishing you all a wonderful Valentine's Day! Does anyone have special plans? Tim and I do goodie bags for the girls and their boyfriends and that's about it!

The law office where I work is in a building that has a bank on the first floor. When I had first started here (before hub was in the picture!) there was a guy that worked as a teller at the bank who asked me out a couple of times, and not being interested in him at all, I gently refused. Valentine's Day came and he presented me with a box of chocolate drops with dark chocolate. Not a fan of chocolate drops or dark chocolate, I took them home and gave them to my uncle, who loved both! He was thrilled with them.

I think my favorite Valentine's Day celebrations were when I was in elementary school and everyone decorated a shoe box with construction paper, doilies and stickers, cutting an opening in the top so everyone could put your Valentine's in the box. It was so exciting to open that box and see if your favorite friends gave you a "special" Valentine! Remember the heart-shaped suckers that were sold by the strip?

To honor St. Valentine, I have one more box loaded with romance novels of every kind. It's one of the U.S. Postal Service's "if it fits, it ships" large boxes. I can't begin to tell you what's in it because it's already packed up and ready to go. There's likely trade romances, maybe a couple of ARCs, series romance and mass market - it's a real mix! I'll draw the winning name this Friday, Feb. 18th.

Ice Ice Baby

The big storm that crossed the country dumping snow and ice cut a swath through central Ohio and we were nailed with an inch of ice. We were home from work on Tuesday and Wednesday because of the ice, and then we had heavier rains move in while the temps were in the mid 20s and started hearing falling trees all over the neighborhood. This is the birch tree in our front yard, so sad. Tim is calling the insurance company today to see if we're covered for its removal. We were so incredibly lucky that it didn't crash into our house, we know, but we're still sad to lose it.

We were without power for not quite 24 hours, not bad considering some folks still don't have electricity.

Anyone else hit hard by the storm? I did a lot of reading while we were stuck at home - will be talking about a fabulous historical, hopefully later today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Does anyone have special plans to ring in the new year? We're going to a hockey game in Columbus, but will be home well before time for the ball drop - meaning I'll likely be looking at my eyelids and miss it! We're not much for partying these days and never go out to celebrate.
I'll probably spend Saturday putting the Christmas decorations away. It's so much more fun getting it all out than putting it away, isn't it?

Christmas all over the place!

This past Friday, Lindsay and I went to a Christmas lunch at Dianne Castell's house with a group of friends who typically get together a couple of times a year. We had a wonderful spaghetti lunch and there were goodies and sweets enough to support a dentist and his family for a year. Yum! Here's a pic of everyone who was there (except Lindsay, who took the photo!):

Lori has even put us all on YouTube with a fun little flip video. Linda Keller's opening mention of Duffy Brown is referring to Dianne's pseudonym for her new mystery series, so exciting! Lindsay did make her way into the video, she's in the yellow scarf and just happens to be getting ice out of an ice bucket that perfectly matches her scarf, ever fashion conscious!

Last night we went to my cousin's house for a Christmas dinner, a house full of family makes for warm, happy memories, doesn't it?

This evening we're going across the back yard to my brother's house to celebrate with them. My five year old great-niece, Hazel, lives in a pink and purple princess world and I can't wait for her to open her Pillow Pet purple unicorn! It's difficult to squeeze enough time in to get together with everyone's work schedules these days. I'm extra thankful that we're able to make it work! Shamefully though, I realized today that while I had gifts marked off my list for both of my nieces, one of them is in Fairbanks and I hadn't mailed hers off yet. It's boxed and ready to go to the post office in the morning - hope they can get it to her in time!
Christmas Eve evening will be spent with Tim's family which means even more hugs, bunches of great food and laughs. Tim's nephew and his wife have a new baby, so that will be make this celebration especially sweet!
As of this morning, the weatherman says we're definitely in the running for a white Christmas with the possibility of 3-5 inches. I think the several inches of snow we have on the ground is white enough already! One of us will go pick up my mom on Christmas and she'll spend the day with us. And then it will all be over and I'll be in my usual post-Christmas funk.
What are your Christmas plans? Have there been any gifts that you just can't find? People (like my hub) who are impossible to shop for? Don't you love buying for the little ones?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no child-like faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.
You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.
No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

It's starting to look a lot like Christmas - and I'm giving away books!

At least at our house it is! We bought a new tree this year because ours was just too big around and took up too much room. We decided to go skinnier and taller. At nine feet, the tree's waaay taller than what I had in mind, but Tim and Kelsey liked the taller one and it turns out that I'm very pleased with it. I have about ten boxes of ornaments and while I still couldn't fit them all on, it is loaded down with them, just the way I like it!! Here's a pic of one section of the tree.

My Christmas celebrations officially start tomorrow with a Christmas dinner/gift exchange with friends I've met through work (some I've known for 33 years), my mom and whichever of my daughters is around. Turns out Kelsey won't be home from school until the 17th, so she'll miss out. Next week our office is having a Christmas lunch since the bosses' schedules wouldn't allow for a weekend dinner out for staff and families, and then lunch with another friend that I used to work with. Lunch with friends in Cincinnati area on the 17th is one that I'm really looking forward to. We'll do a cookie exchange and an ornament exchange, great fun! Our office has an ornament exchange/lunch on the 22nd, more fun! Sounds like a lot of eating and a lot of ornaments, doesn't it? lol

Are any of you big Christmas music listeners? I started listening a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving, and my boss and I have been trading holiday CDs for the past week, so fun! I don't like to listen after Christmas Day and always feel like I haven't listened to nearly enough holiday music when Christmas is said and done, so I start extra early!

Ohio, like so many other states, has been hit hard by cold, snowy weather. Not more than a couple of inches of snow, but blustery and cold. Our low tonight is supposed to be below 10 degrees. I wish Mother Nature would get the stick out of her but and let us slide into winter a little more gradual!

What's anyone reading these days? I finished Maya Banks' latest, NO PLACE TO RUN, this evening and could cry that I'm done. I'm loving this series and want more, more, more!

Packing up five boxes to send to the troops - included lots of Christmas goodies and need to get off my butt and get them to the post office so they'll get there in time. I'm really pushing the envelope on having enough time for them to ship.

Anyone remember the contest I talked about earlier? It's going to start with this post. I'm going to let it run until December 20th. I'll draw two names from all who comment between now and then and each will get a large flat rate box filled with books. As usual, send a friend who mentions your name and you'll get an extra entry for each friend. I don't have time to name all of the books or allow anyone to pick and choose - what I can fill the box with is what you'll get! Some of these books have been read, some not, some may be autographed and some may be ARCs - I can guarantee that they are clean and in good (if not excellent) condition. If you win and don't need/want them all, I only ask that you pass them on to a friend, hospital, retirement facility or library.

Feeling like a real turkey

And no, it has nothing to do with Thanksgiving. I'm feeling incredibly guilty about having neglected my blog for so long. Can't explain why, there've been no family emergencies, no work crisis, I have no excuse except sheer laziness and a temporary lack of interest.
I'd like everyone to share their Thanksgiving plans. Is anyone traveling far away to get together with family and/or friends? We're staying here in town and going to my cousin's house. I've been asked to bring a dessert. Since there will be pies, I'll be baking a cake.
I've been doing some decluttering and cleaning and as a result, have two shopping bags full of books. I'm going to do a couple of giveaways closer to the Christmas holiday and will be giving away boxes of books - however many books I can cram into the "if it fits, it ships" boxes from the postal service. The books are a wide range of sub-genres and include Harlequin Presents and Silhouette Desires, ARCs, trade paperbacks and mass market paperbacks.
So please forgive me for sucking so lately, and share your Thanksgiving plans! I'll be back to discuss current reads very soon!

My review:
Working with her caterer sister at a wedding reception, Katie Long never guessed she would find herself intimately connected with Prosecuting Attorney candidate Eric Kimura. Keeping a close eye on Eric at the wedding reception of his former fiancee is not one of Katie's finer moments, but she desperately needs money. She doesn't know who, but someone was willing to pay for info on Eric's actions and reactions at the wedding and reception, and Katie was in a position to accommodate. Eric wants to explore the possibilities of a relationship with Katie, but she's keeping a secret that could tear them apart before they have an opportunity to see what the future could hold.
Eric knows his every move at the reception is being dissected. His run for the office of Honolulu's Prosecuting Attorney in the upcoming election has put him under the microscope. Meeting Katie is a real bright spot in the harried confusion that his life has become. As Eric and Katie are getting to know each other, his campaign is taking hit after hit with rumors and scandalous accusations about him and his former fiancee.
HelenKay's characters are wonderfully flawed with just enough imperfections to keep them real. Katie and Eric are no exception. Katie was more than a little lost when her parents died and she made some poor lifestyle choices. Eric knows about her mistakes and sees through them to the real Katie - and he likes what he sees. Katie's sister and her baby girl are crucial to Katie's story. The three may seem a little vulnerable, but they possess an underlying strength that bonds them. Eric has friends and family who are extremely protective of him and his professional reputation. Eric knows image is important to all candidates but realizes that he wants Katie in his life too badly to allow her to continue to hold her secret.
I highly recommend IMPULSIVE to all contemporary romance readers. If you've read HelenKay's work before, you already know what an amazing storyteller she is. If you haven't read her work, IMPULSIVE would be an excellent place to start!

Fall Festivals abound!

Do any of you enjoy going to fall festivals? We absolutely love them - artisan-made unique crafts, great food and gorgeous changing leaves - if only everyone else would stay home so they weren't so crowded! Last weekend we went to the Bob Evans Farm Festival in southern Ohio and had a great time. Decided that having been there three of the last four years, we probably won't go for a couple of years. This weekend we're heading north to Attica, Ohio to a festival that we've never been to, but it came highly recommended from a vendor at the Bob Evans fest. last weekend. If nothing else, we'll enjoy the road trip as it's supposed to be sunny with temps in the low 60s.
What are your plans for the weekend? My weekend is starting off with a visit to the bloodmobile for donation after work. My house needs some serious tending and I have several books for review that I'm very far behind on, so I'll be trying to do some cleaning up and catching up!

The latest release from author Shelli Stevens is GOING DOWN, Book 1 in her Holding Out for a Hero series. Check out Ms. Stevens' website for ordering details and an excerpt. I haven't read every one of Ms. Stevens' books, but have read a few and enjoyed them all. You'll have to excuse the hugeness of the book cover I put up - although I doubt that any of you are seriously complaining!

GOING DOWN has sparks and more, as Shelli Stevens gives readers an intriguing love story about learning how to trust, and love, again.
Eleanor “Ellie” Owen has left Chicago in a hurry, but not before putting great thought and planning into her escape. She’s been subpoenaed to testify against her abusive, drug trafficking ex-boyfriend and is terrified that he or one of his friends, including a corrupt police officer, will act on their escalating threats should she testify for the prosecution. Renting a house in Wyattville, Oregon, under an assumed name seems like a good idea until she almost immediately catches the eye of local sheriff Tyson Wyatt. Wyattville is typical of most small towns, where everyone knows their neighbors – and their neighbors’ business. Tyson’s family and the local townspeople aren’t shy about butting in and trying to match the two. But the closer Tyson gets the more distant Ellie becomes, leaving both frustrated and confused.
Wyatt feels certain that Ellie is hiding something but she’s not talking. As their relationship intensifies, Tyson is more deeply bothered by her distrust. He has never fallen head over heels for someone in such a short amount of time but has no doubt that this could be the real thing, if only Ellie would trust him enough to tell him the truth. Eventually, Ellie has to explain her painful, frightening past to Tyson, and the two work together to secure her safety in testifying.
GOING DOWN is a quick read but at no expense to the quality of the story. Ellie’s fear is believable and I feel certain it’s a fair example of the thoughts and actions of someone living in true fear. Tyson’s determination to find the truth is equally well written, and I appreciated that he wasn’t constantly hounding Ellie for the truth. He was patient and kind, waiting for her to come to him with the truth. Townspeople and Tyson’s family are secondary characters that add to the delicious richness of the storytelling. I give GOING DOWN a strong recommendation and encourage anyone who hasn’t read any of Shelli Stevens’ work to give her a try.

My review:

When Maddie Moore loses her production company job in L.A., she decides to follow up on the invite to the Washington coast resort inn she has inherited with her two step-sisters. Maddie, who was raised by her father, wasn't especially close to her late mother and her sisters are more or less strangers to her. Her efforts at a new beginning get off to a rough start when she nearly runs over a fabulous looking biker on her way into town. She makes sure he's okay and then tries not to pay him much mind because although he is gorgeous with a capital "G" she has sworn off men. Seriously. No. More. Men.
Maddie and her sisters couldn't possibly be more different from one another if they tried. Each had a different father and were raised by those fathers, while their mother sowed her oats and lived free. The inn Maddie and her sisters, Tara and Chloe, have inherited is a little on the rough side, needing major repairs and even more major tender loving care, no easy task when they are all seriously light in the wallet. Maddie wants to connect with her now gone mother, and is desperate to make Lucky Harbor her home. She hopes with all her heart that she can convince her sisters to work with her to give running the inn a try but they're both proving to be a hard sell.

Jackson "Jax" Cullen, Maddie's near miss on the motorcycle, is intrigued by Maddie and wants to get to know her, charmed by her insistence that she's not interested in a relationship. Charmed isn't exactly the world that comes to his mind at the sparks that fly when they're together. When Jax discovers the secret behind Maddie's escape from her previous relationship, and considers the secret that he has neglected to tell her, he knows he's treading seriously rough water. He's hopeful he can change her mind into giving them a chance but fears that both of their hearts may end up broken.

I've told Jill at least twice that I seriously think readers will fall in love with her "Simply" series and the charm of the characters and the town. Lucky Harbor is one of those places where everyone knows you (and your business) and will do anything to help you out. Maddie puts heart and soul into everything she does and that is just one of the things about her that Jax finds irresistible. While Maddie is reluctant to enter into a relationship with Jax, his good-natured charm and kind, easygoing spirit are contagious. If only both weren't holding onto secrets from their past that threaten their future.

I highly recommend SIMPLY IRRESISTIBLE to anyone who loved Jill's previous books and to anyone who is looking for a new romance author!

A brief review:
May Aiona works in the exclusive Hawaiian restaurant owned by Chris Dupree (whose story is told in A LITTLE HARMLESS PLEASURE) and while she loves her job, something is missing in her life. That something is the love and affection of a man, but the only man she's ever wanted is Evan Chambers, co-owner of a bondage club. May is intrigued by the BDSM lifestyle and thinks that perhaps it's the answer the strange restlessness inside her. When she visits the club and is paired with Evan as her dom, she couldn't be more pleased. By the end of their session however, incredible pleasure discovered, she rushes away with her emotions in tatters. Evan is more confused than ever, as the suspect emotions he's felt for May are most definitely confirmed. He knows that he'll never be satisfied with another woman.

Will pride keep these two apart or will true love bring them together? May and Evan are both hard-headed and strong-willed. When threats are made against May and then begin to escalate, Evan is more determined than ever to keep her safe, no easy task when she has a father and a brother who are highly protective. I have enjoyed the previous Harmless books so far and as I've said before, yes, they're a little dirty and a little edgy, but I would stress that Mel's writing style is such that it easily allows exception for a spot or two of discomfort. Melissa successfully puts strong emotion into her books, and conversations and actions are incredibly realistic. It's easy to lose yourself in her books as the characters and their conversations come to life on the page. Catching up with characters from previous books is always fun, but I would point out that while the books in this series easily stand on their own, I strongly suggest reading in order for even more reading pleasure!

My review:
THE ICING ON THE CAKE is Alison Kent's latest release and while it's slightly different from what readers have come to expect from her, it is a evocatively beautiful love story based on the true story of Michelle Snow and Todd Bracken who met via Match.com. In my expert, readerly (hey, my blog, my made-up words) opinion, it's reason to fall in love with Alison Kent all over again!
Michelle Snow reluctantly signs up at Match.com at the repeated coaxing of her girlfriends. The girlfriend scenes in this book are some of my favorites. Their personalities are so different, but they are united in their affection for each other, just as girlfriends should be. Todd Bracken has a lot going on and yet there is a void in his life - he decides to take a chance on Michelle being the one who can fill that void. Their initial online conversations are so much fun. Both are intelligent and quick-witted, but unsure enough that occasionally they worry over something they've said being misconstrued - who hasn't felt that way over an email or tweet that they've sent? Totally realistic. From their initial date which was intended to consist of a quick, introductory drink but lasting for hours instead, both knew there was something special between them and they had an undeniable need to pursue it.
Michelle and Todd have successful jobs, lives rich with family and friends. Michelle's relationship with her parents is especially sweet, and they fully support her dream of owning her own bakery. Her excitement is shared and encouraged by Todd and his enthusiasm provides a boost of confidence to Michelle's hesitation. Todd's family situation couldn't be more different from Michelle's and while it isn't warm and fuzzy, it is well-written and the emotions of his broken home will likely strike a chord with many readers.
THE ICING ON THE CAKE is a powerful love story, written in Alison Kent's unique style of sharp, crisp storytelling. Not explicit, but sweetly sexy with clever character banter that keeps the reader smiling. One of my favorite quotes from the book isn't a romantic one, but pulled from a conversation between Michelle and her mother about opening a bakery. Michelle says: "I'm just ready to go to work and breathe in hot sugar and vanilla instead of all the desperation and anger stinking up the office." - it reminded me of a conversation I had with my girls once while baking, about how calming it always is for me to smell sugar, butter and vanilla working together to produce something that will be shared and enjoyed with my family and/or friends.

A day spent at the antique/flea market

Most of you probably know that Tim and I love to go to antique markets, shops and malls. Friday we went to a huge antique/flea market at the Clark County fairgrounds here in Ohio. They have monthly shows, but three times a year they have "extravaganzas" with hundreds of vendors - comfy walking shoes are a must! We planned the trip for several weeks and both took a vacation day. We didn't buy much, a beautiful crystal snowflake Christmas brooch for me, a three-spout measuring glass for me (I collect unique measuring cups and glasses), and the above beautiful garden decoration for both of us! Yes, I typically make out better than Tim! Pics don't do this treasure justice and it's difficult to see how gorgeous it is. I bought one for my best friend's birthday in June, and regret that we no longer do Christmas gifts for each other because I'm so anxious to give it to her. Hers has clear, blue and pink dishes, so feminine and pretty. Plus, I'm afraid I'll pack it away and not remember where it is come next June! These truly wouldn't be difficult to make, if I could find out what kind of adhesive they're held together with. I thought E-6000, but the woman who makes them says it won't hold with the weight of the glass. This particular one is made with a full size dinner plate, a green cut-glass bowl that's very thick and heavy, a smaller cut glass bowl and in the center of that, a beautiful pink lid, perhaps from a sugar bowl.

Today was spent at a baby shower for Tim's cousin's daughter. She's expecting a little boy in about four weeks and it was so fun seeing all of the little baby goodies! As fun as it was though, I have to admit that I much prefer buying for baby girls! It was great seeing Tim's family though, so many of them we only see a couple of times a year.

We have no plans for tomorrow and that's just fine with me. I'll be back at work on Monday morning in the blink of an eye!

A new cover for Pamela Clare's BREAKING POINT

You know how you have a book that you're anticipating like no other? You know the one I'm talking about, right? One you want more than any other? Yep, that one - THE BOOK. For me that book is by Pamela Clare and with every little tease she gives her readers, I grow more and more impatient. I'll be waiting until July of next year for BREAKING POINT. Maybe it will be out in time for my July 17 birthday, right? Let's hope so! BREAKING POINT is the next in the I-Team Series, without a doubt the best romantic suspense series I've ever read. Ever. With each book I'm certain that I've just read the absolute best to come, which has me on pins and needs for BREAKING POINT!

And I haven't even mentioned the cover. Geez Louise, do they get any better? Does anyone know if this is the same cover model used on the upcoming Jaci Burton book? Power Play? I'm not certain of the title and I'm too lazy right now to check. I'm thinking there's a striking similarity between those wonderfully hard bodies.

Making adjustments

As of last week, and for the first time in over 16 years, Tim is working first shift instead of second. This means that he's home in the evening - every single evening. Our girls were three and eight when he started his current job/working nights, so they were more or less raised by a single parent during the week. I'm glad to have him home, truly I am, but it has necessitated some adjustments to dinner time and dinner itself. When I was home alone, I would occasionally have a bowl of cereal or oatmeal for dinner, fix some bacon later and make a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich for him to take for his dinner the next night. Or have said bowl of cereal then throw something on the grill for him to take the next day. Strangely, he doesn't consider a bowl of cereal dinner. Silly man. I won't even get into my biggest gripe - his favorite shows (anything involving cops, true crime or hauntings) are so much different from mine - we've agreed to compromise once "my" television viewing season starts back up. We'll see.
The one thing that makes me most sad about those years he spent on second shift are all of the girls' events, sports and school, that he missed. He would take a vacation day if the occasion merited, but you can imagine his frustration at missing outstanding softball, tennis or volleyball plays, school awards nights and band concerts. There simply was no possible way for him to see even a portion of them. There were a few occasions that he would drive like the wind (he works a good 40 min. away) on his dinner hour, watch a little bit of softball while wolfing down a sandwich, and then fly down the road back to work.
It was brutal for Tim the day we took Lindsay to college - not only was it her birthday, but I know he was thinking about all of those missed events and years that had slipped by, and here we were moving her away from home. Lindsay was such a tomboy until she was around 13 or so, and Tim loved playing catch with her, taking her fishing, etc. We had to stop a couple of times along the way to Ohio U, he was an absolute basket case. I'm wiping tears just remembering his heartache.
Don't get me wrong, he was sad when we took Kelsey too. She went to afternoon kindergarten and he would get her up and around for school, making her ponytails or braids, fixing her lunch, and if time allowed they worked on her poker game. Yes, he cried the first couple of times we left Kelsey at school too. Kelsey seems to have a defense mechanism that kicks in the day before she has to go back to school and she turns into the devil incarnate - makes it much easier to say goodbye when she's sporting horns and a pointy tail. I think maybe it's easier for her too if we're all a little peeved w/each other! Dr. Phil?
Tim and I have been married 31 years and while he's been a great dad and a real pal to both of our girls, he and I have settled into a (mostly) easy, comfortable relationship, just as much good friends as husband and wife.

Before and After!

Every June at the Lori Foster/Dianne Castell Reader-Author get together, I collect tangible items and (gladly) accept monetary donations for shopping and shipping for our troops that are deployed. I mailed two big boxes in early August, then fell behind with work, helping Kelsey get ready to go back to school, etc. I decided that today was going to be the day to wrap it up and got the rest ready to go - see the pic below. After loading down several boxes, Tim and I went to the grocery and picked up a bunch more. In my best estimation, this shipment should put us right around 1,000 pounds shipped to date - how awesome is that? This is the before pic, as in before packing up and then buying more:

After: I still need to print letters and fill out the customs paperwork for the boxes, but they're packed and ready to go to the post office on Tuesday. The best part is that after shipping I should still have enough money to do more shopping and shipping to send a few holiday packages. I have to admit that the holiday boxes are my favorite to put together.

And just for fun - another "before" pic: three of our kitties a couple of years ago, Sophie, Tony as a youngster, and Lottie.

The after pic: Tony, who is now our tallest cat, and Phoebe, our latest rescue/adoptee. Phoebe will be going to Kent State with Kelsey in a few weeks, once she and her roommates are settled into their apartment and their daily routines. That's the plan, but I have to admit that I've gotten quite attached to the little thing and would be happy to keep her with me! What's one more cat, right? Tim laughs that feisty little Phoebe is just like Kelsey (who, for those who haven't met her, weighs about 105 soaking wet) - full of piss and vinegar! So funny and oh, so true!

Mariah Stewart's latest series, The Chesapeake Diaries - there's a giveaway!

I'm sure most of you have read at least one Mariah Stewart book, if not several. I fall into the "several" group, although I'll admit that it's been a while. I was excited to review COMING HOME for Ms. Stewart on behalf of Romance Junkies and hope that if you haven't already, you'll check out this "The Chesapeake Diaries" series. Yes, I know I typically push romantic suspense, but this is a prime example of contemporary writing. In so many small-town contemps, I find the characters to be a little cookie cutter, sweetly perfect and often unrealistic. Not so in COMING HOME. The hero and heroine are slightly (and believably) flawed and skeptical enough that while there's an attraction from the start, it's far from love at first sight. COMING HOME, first in the new Chesapeake Diaries series by Mariah Stewart, is a heartwarming book that deals with several subjects, not all of which are sweet and pretty. Ms. Stewart touches on subjects seldom brought to light in small-town romances, such as neglect, abuse, and murder. Vanessa’s past was unsavory on many levels and she unashamedly and regretfully admits her mistakes. Gray was betrayed by those closest to him and as a result had closed himself off from the family who loves and cares about him.
There has been a resurgence of contemporary small-town romance recently and I can’t help but feel that with realistic, heartwarming stories like COMING HOME, the trend will successfully continue.

The Back to School Blues - I'm singing them

Today was the first day of school for the city school kids here. While I feel for the kids having to get up early again and their moms and dads hustling to get them out the door, it was kind of nice to hear the buses running through the neighborhood bright and early. Who can forget the stiff squeakiness of new Ked's sneakers and new skirts and dresses. In our school district, girls weren't allowed to wear slacks until I was in the sixth grade, and I think my mom made me wait until the following school year to wear them! Jeans were allowed the next year and my elephant bells and I were all over that! The pic of the lunchbox above? Looks exactly like the one I carried all through elementary school - and I still have it! I never had the thermos though, always paid my .04 for a carton of chocolate milk. I don't think my mom trusted me not to break the glass insulated liners that thermos bottles had back then.

I miss the days of taking the girls shopping for school clothes and supplies and while lamenting this to them a week or so ago, was assured that I could take them shopping for new clothes and supplies any old time I wanted. The little smart asses. We still have one daughter in college, but it's just not the same getting her ready to move into an apartment as it was buying new pencils, crayons and glue sticks - and lunch boxes! I think the girls had new ones every single year because the nylon ones get especially gross by the end of the year.

Do you miss your school days? Have fond memories of the first day of school? Do any of you still have younger ones at home to share the excitement and promise of a new school year? My mom used to take pictures of us every single year on the first day of school, a tradition I continued with my girls. I have their first day of school photos through their senior year and trust me, by then they're much less willing to stand on the front porch to get their picture taken!

I would point out that I haven't heard from Heidi yet. If I don't hear from her by 9:00 or so this evening, I'll be drawing a new winner for the Maya Banks books.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have won a copy of an ARC of THE DARKEST HOUR from Maya Banks in a Twitter contest. I'm not ashamed to admit that I squealed a little - okay, it was quite loudly - when I saw that I was the winner. This book is, in my opinion, the very best work from Maya Banks to date. I've read all of her "Sweet" series and most of the "Colter" series and despite being them a little more gritty and raw than books I typically choose, I enjoyed them very much. I've also read her "Kings of the Boardroom" Desires and especially adored those characters. THE DARKEST HOUR is a bit of a mix of her previous works, the edginess is there and the Alpha males are there in a very big way, but there's the sweetness and the rich emotions of the Desires too.

About the book:
It’s been one year since ex-Navy SEAL Ethan Kelly last saw his wife Rachel alive. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt over his failures as a husband, Ethan shuts himself off from everything and everyone.

My review:
It's been a year since Ethan Kelly's wife, Rachel, was killed in a plane crash while on a humanitarian mission in the jungles of Colombia. His devastation is relentless and controls every aspect of his life, every day of his life. A year to the day after Rachel's death, Ethan receives a priority package with GPS coordinates and photos that suggest Rachel is alive. He convinces his brothers, whose business is Kelly Group International (KGI), specializing in kidnap and hostage recoveries, to help him in rescuing Rachel. His brothers are doubtful that the female in the grainy photos is Rachel but realize that whether it's Rachel or not, the person is a victim and is being held against her will. Upon arrival at the specified location, they're met with intense resistance and eventually remove Rachel. Sadly, she's suffering a partial amnesia and doesn't fully recognize, or trust, some of the Kelly brothers. The conditions in which Rachel has been held, and the changes in her because of the harshness, are heartbreakingly difficult for Ethan and his brothers. She definitely isn't the same woman they knew and it pains them greatly to know the trauma she's suffered for an entire year without them knowing.
In a way, Rachel's amnesia and the drugs that her captors have been pumping into her, are a bit of a blessing as far as masking the passage of time. In every other way, it's a sad injustice. She's grateful to have been rescued, but now has to deal with the stark realities of an addiction she had no control over as well as a family that for the most part she doesn't remember. The Kellys quickly realize that repeated accidents now befalling Rachel aren't accidents at all and someone is out to get her. Ethan is struggling as much as Rachel, knowing that when her memory fully returns she'll remember secrets that he hasn't been strong enough to reveal. Secrets that just might tear them apart forever.
THE DARKEST HOUR is intriguing and suspenseful and Maya Banks, in writing Rachel's drug addiction, takes her heroine where I personally believe few authors would dare. Descriptions of jungle conditions and dangers, the desperations of Rachel's withdrawal, and Ethan's pain and confusion over her psychological state, become almost tangible. I found myself repeatedly experiencing those little tugs in my chest at the multitude of emotions that the characters experienced - a sure sign of a well-written love story. A side story involving Ethan's parents adds circumstances that serve well in exposing the dynamics of this fascinating family. I give THE DARKEST HOUR my strongest recommendation and can't wait for the December release of NO PLACE TO RUN, followed by HIDDEN AWAY in March, 2011. Romantic suspense fans do not want to miss the Kelly brothers! And don't forget the upcoming FOUR PLAY a two-author anthology with Shayla Black.

Author Dee Davis has another new book on the shelves! DESPERATE DEEDS is available now, and I can't stress enough how much I enjoyed this series. Ms. Davis has excerpts on her website; I hope you'll check them out. I saw that a couple of reviewers felt that this book fell down on the job, not pulling it's weight as the third in the series. I couldn't disagree more. I think this series was painstakingly researched and superbly written and I was not disappointed in the least. If you've read any or all of the books in this series, please share your thoughts.

Author Dee Davis has done some serious stirring of the romantic suspense pot with DESPERATE DEEDS – mixing a beautiful demolitions expert working under the guise of an ivy league English professor with a British agent whose smooth seductions are as impressive as his capability as an MI-5 agent.
When a mission goes suspiciously wrong, A-Tac demolitions expert Tyler Hanson decides to blow off steam with an evening fuel by alcohol and a heated one night stand with a gorgeous Brit. At the next A-Tac meeting, Tyler discovers that her one night stand is none other than British MI-5 agent, Owen Wakefield, and he’s been assigned to work with A-Tac. Even more disturbing, Tyler’s suspected of being responsible for the attack that left two soldiers dead and several highly sophisticated detonators missing. Her anger at being a suspect is short-lived as she deals with a budding relationship with Owen, her larger than life Army general father’s struggle with Alzheimer’s and one violent incident after another, including the deaths of some of the people closest to Tyler. It soon appears that there’s someone on the inside working against A-Tac.
Owen Wakefield finds himself in a difficult situation. Placed with the A-Tac team, he finds himself a stranger, but is quickly welcomed to assist in the investigation. It is obvious that Ms. Davis has done her research to bring readers characters with the knowledge and expertise to carry out both roles. This is the third book in what I have found to be an outstanding series, following DARK DECEPTIONS and DANGEROUS DESIRES. I was pleased that this third book didn’t lose momentum; the intrigue and suspense is just as strong. Tyler’s father’s Alzheimer’s adds a touch of painful reality, and previous characters are key to the story but allow the focus to remain on Tyler and Owen. I highly recommend DESPERATE DEEDS and hope that all readers who enjoy well-written romantic suspense will check out this series by Dee Davis.

Summer in Ohio, aka Hotter than Hades

What do you think of when you study this picture? I think of how it feels when I step outside. It's hot as hell in Ohio right now. I know it's hot other places too, but I'm in Ohio so I know that's where it's the most miserable. ha!

Is it hot where you are? How are you staying cool? I love going to the pool but haven't been yet this year. We've already had a little vacation to Gatlinburg - where it was 99 degrees, just as miserable as being at home. The farm markets are really starting to get an abundance of produce now - we buy zucchini, yellow squash and candy onions, slice them thick and grill them - so very good w/just a little olive oil, salt and pepper. Sometimes we'll sprinkle some freshly grated parmesan cheese on top too, yum!

I'm working on a review for the third book in the Dee Davis series - I don't know if anyone has picked up the first two in the series yet, but I absolutely suggest that you do.

One book that I'm practicaly antsy about is Erin McCarthy's HOT FINISH - the other two books in the series were great fun and I loved them, but Ryder and Suzanne's story is going to be fabuloso, I just know it! Some of my friends have advance copies and I'm trying very hard to tone down the green!

NAUTI AND WILD, coming soon from Jaci Burton and Lora Leigh

I was fortunate enough to win an ARC of NAUTI AND WILD from author Jaci Burton in a Twitter contest (thanks, Jaci!). NAUTI AND WILD is a two-story anthology with stories by Jaci Burton and Lora Leigh . Like most romance readers, I've read many of the books by both of these authors, always enjoy them very much, and have no reservations about recommending them to anyone who enjoys fast-paced, extremely heated romance.

Lora Leigh's NAUTI KISSES
John Walker, Jr. left his family’s Boston law firm to return to his father’s hometown of Somerset, Kentucky where he makes a houseboat home and runs with the well-known McKay boys (from previous “Nauti” stories). His leaving came on the heels of a broken engagement, with long-time family friend and his father’s goddaughter, Sierra Lucas, being instrumental in causing his breaking things off with his fiancée. A year later, there’s been a vicious attack on Sierra, leaving her battered and broken. When it’s determined that this was not a random or serial attack, John’s father decides that Sierra needs a safe place to stay until her attacker is found and she is secreted away to John’s houseboat in Kentucky. The heat and long-repressed attraction between John and Sierra is a tad predictable, but it’s satisfying, as is catching up with characters from previous “Nauti” books.
Loving romantic suspense, I like that Lora Leigh’s heroines are typically in need of an alpha man to protect them and keep them safe, but have recently felt that her stories are a tad repetitive. The hero is usually on the verge of going ballistic over someone mistreating/injuring/threatening the heroine, which makes me wish they would administer some gentle, lovingly tender ministrations rather than immediately (and often roughly) screwing the heroine’s brains out. That said, I keep buying and reading them, because there’s an abundance of good emotion and well-written family/friends dynamics going on!

Jaci Burton's RIDING THE EDGE
Rick Benetti is beyond aggravated at the thought of “babysitting” Ava Vargas, daughter of a hard-nosed Senator, who has followed her best friend into the dark, dangerous world of the Hellraisers motorcycle gang. Ava is concerned as to why her shy, studious, lifelong friend has ditched grad school and turned to a life centered around drugs and wild, unpredictable behavior. She has no desire to follow her friend on her path to destruction as her father worries, but feels a determined desperation to get her friend back before it’s too late. Rick’s undercover job for the government as a Wild Rider has him returning to a life he left behind years before. This time though, he’s working to protect a beautiful, incredibly sensual young woman while keeping his finger on the criminal pulse of the gang. Equally troubling is the fact that his own cousin, who was like a brother to him while growing up, is one of the ringleaders of the gang. Rick and Ava are quickly and unexpectedly caught up in a passionately heated relationship but Rick, having never received or given love, doesn’t see a place for Ava in his future.
Jaci Burton's story has the most meat of the two, in my opinion. Rick and Ava are both highly intelligent and although their first attraction may have been sexual, it isn't long before they see much deeper into one another. Soon Rick's case is wrapped up and it's time for them to go their separate ways. Rick has put his past behind him his entire life, and despite feeling unfamiliar new emotions, he has no doubt that he'll be able to put Ava behind him. Unfortunately, his heart didn't get the message and the result is a savagely painful ache, the likes of which he's never experienced.

Author Dee Davis has a new book available, with another releasing hot on its heels! DANGEROUS DESIRES is on the shelves now and DESPERATE DEEDS will be out around the first of August, 2010. The powers that be at Romance Junkies were smiling down on me (thanks, Cat!) and I was able to get all three books for review - talk about excited! Add to that her spending the past three years purportedly as the mistress to one of the world’s most vile, evil crime lords. The loss of the only friend she had in prison was almost her undoing, but when she learned of the loss of her sister to a long battle with drugs, she gave up and played her very last card, hoping for salvation. When Drake Flynn and the A-Tac team come to her rescue, she’s skeptical about being delivered to safety and tries to escape them. Drake is nothing if not determined however, and Madeline soon finds herself safe and secure, a feeling she is unaccustomed to.
Drake is, to say the least, not very trusting of women. Seriously burned by the last woman he allowed to share his life, he’s even more distrusting of Madeline when she tries to escape, jeopardizing everyone on his team. Once both are confident that they are on the same side, they head to meet up with the rest of the A-Tac members. It’s hot in the jungle and passions flare to match the intensity of the harsh, steamy heat that surrounds them. Drake knows that he’ll never love again, but he can’t deny a strong attraction to Madeline.
DANGEROUS DESIRES smoothly follows DARK DECEPTIONS and is an outstanding continuation of an intriguing series by Dee Davis. Drake is instantly distrustful of Madeline and she in turn fears betrayal upon being returned to the U.S. Dee Davis has an incredible talent for taking readers on action-packed thrill rides, this time through the wilds of the jungle. The CIA’s A-Tac team works behind the guise of ivy league professors, but their knowledge of specific subjects add a realistic and interesting aspect to the series. Crucial research has been done to give characters the knowledge and expertise to carry out their roles as educators. Catching up with characters from DARK DECEPTIONS was a bonus. Back story is excellently written so as to not overpower or take away from Drake and Madeline’s story. I know that I won’t be the only reader anxiously awaiting DESPERATE DEEDS, available in August, 2010.
